The Big Man, as the Nepalese called conservationist Sir Edmund Hillary, has passed away at 88 years old. He was the first to conquer Mount Everest with his guide, Tenzing Norgay. He apparently said “We knocked the bastard off.” after returning to base camp. At 33, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, the only non-political person living outside Britain to be made a member of the Order of the Garter. He founded the Himalayan Trust to fund the building of Nepalese schools, airfields and hospitals, and for reforestation. He demanded that mountaineers clean up tons of climbing-related debris on the slopes of the world’s highest peak. Rest in Peace Sir Ed.
